Birds seen/heard in Douglas Park on Saturday, July 11, 2020, 3:58 hours (early morning to late morning)

Number of identified species this visit:  40

Sunny with a few high clouds on the horizon, intermittent light breeze mostly from the north, mid 70s to upper 80s. The gates at the north end of the park were open, so I parked in the Cultural Center lot, checked between the lagoons, walked the Cultural Center mezzanine to the steps, walked all around the sanctuary, walked outside the west half of the sanctuary to the break in the fence, crossed and walked my full route south of Ogden. Then I crossed back to the break in the fence and walked along the rest of the south and the east fences of the sanctuary (outside the fence) and around north and southeast lagoons. The grass and soil were dry and mud cracked, and I saw no puddles. The lagoon and Lily Pond levels were a little deeper than last visit. I found almost all the expected nesters from this summer, plus a few extra flycatchers, but no Red-eyed Vireo this time. The sanctuary had 31 bird species, south of Ogden 10 species, and the rest of the park 32 species.

I also found at least 9 Monarch butterflies, there were still lots of dragonflies, and I saw Whirligig Beetles on the Lily Pond!

Canada Goose  100     Mostly around north and southeast lagoons. Neck collar 00H was present again.

Wood Duck  4     On a log at the south edge of the island.

Mallard  4     Two on sanctuary lagoon and two on north lagoon.

Chimney Swift  30     At one point there were 20 drinking from the sanctuary lagoon.

Killdeer  2     On the mudflat (except when they flushed).

Spotted Sandpiper  1     Fly around the edges of sanctuary lagoon, calling.

Ring-billed Gull  30     There were only two picking through garbage at the north end of the park, but at least 18 on the high school roof and a half dozen more on the Cultural Center (plus lots of flyovers). I only saw adults.

Great Blue Heron  1     Adult waded in sanctuary lagoon, then flew north (accompanied by a male Red-winged Blackbird).

Black-crowned Night-Heron  4     Two adults by sanctuary lagoon, one adult on the island, and my first juvenile of the summer on a log at the edge of north lagoon.

Cooper’s Hawk  3     Three juveniles were in trees around the southwest section of the golf course.

Downy Woodpecker  5     Scattered along my route.

Northern Flicker  3     One near the southeast corner of the sanctuary and two by north lagoon.

Eastern Wood-Pewee  1     Singing by north lagoon’s inlet.

Willow Flycatcher  1     In a mulberry at the northwest corner of sanctuary lagoon. It sang one phrase.

Eastern Phoebe  2     Two were catching insects over the mini-golf course, then flying to the grate over the porthole, then disappearing into the dark within the porthole with their mouthfuls of bugs.

Great Crested Flycatcher  1     In a tree by north lagoon’s inlet. (I did not hear it call or sing.)

Eastern Kingbird  2     Sang from east and west of the Cultural Center.

Warbling Vireo  8     All eight were singing, in the usual spots.

American Crow  3     Calling from various places north of Ogden.

Black-capped Chickadee  6     In three different spots, and three were singing.

Barn Swallow  30     Most stayed within the sanctuary, where I saw at least six fledglings. One picked up some sticks on the mud flats, and others may have collected mud there (could not tell for sure).

White-breasted Nuthatch  2     One called and sang along Sacramento, another called in the southeast corner of the sanctuary.

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher  6     Scattered along my route, mostly in honey locusts.

European Starling  22     On lawns and in mulberry trees, with lots of juveniles.

Gray Catbird  6     At least four sang, from the usual spots.

American Robin  40     Most were on lawns or in mulberry trees. I did not hear any w=singing, but I saw one chase a grackle.

Cedar Waxwing  9     I saw no live birds at the nest, but there was a rather large, mostly naked dead fledgling hanging from plastic mesh that had been incorporated into the nest. (The dead nestling looked big enough to be a cowbird, but not enough feathers to be certain. The mesh came from the new grass that had been seeded in around the new artificial turf field, south of Ogden.) All the Cedar Waxwings I saw were adults catching insects, no juveniles so far.

House Sparrow  13     On lawns and in mulberry trees, north and south of Ogden.

American Goldfinch  16     Five sang, I saw a couple of pairs together, and one female was picking up small pieces of stiff fiber-like material from mud flat phragmites stubs (see photo).

Chipping Sparrow  1     Foraged on mostly bare soil north of the waterfall.

Song Sparrow  4     At least two sang, from the usual spots.

Baltimore Oriole  3     Whistled and chattered in trees around north and southeast lagoons.

Red-winged Blackbird  50     Only about five sang, but there were still agitated males and females at three different spots around the lagoons (but none dive-bombed me).

Brown-headed Cowbird  2     One called by the parking lot, the other was foraging on the road by the tennis courts.

Common Grackle  8     Most were around north lagoon.

Common Yellowthroat  2     Both sang just a couple of times, from the usual spots.

American Redstart  1     Sang multiple times in the thicket and once or twice south of Ogden.

Yellow Warbler  4     All four sang a least a little.

Northern Cardinal  15     At least eight sang, and I heard at least one fledgling making begging calls.

Indigo Bunting  1     One gave alarm calls from the large meadow when I walked past its perches.

passerine sp.  7     Poorly seen in foliage and fast flybys.
