Birds seen/heard in Douglas Park on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 (3:55 hours, early to late morning)

Number of identified species this visit:  33

Sunny with some clouds developing, calm then a slight breeze developing, frost on most surfaces when I arrived, lower 30s to mid 40s. I walked around the north and southeast lagoons, walked south of Ogden, then covered the sanctuary inside and outside the fence. The sanctuary had 23 bird species, south of Ogden 14 species, and the rest of the park 27 species.

Greater White-fronted Goose  1     Continuing, at the south edge of southeast lagoon when I first arrived, but it flew while I was at north lagoon and I did not see it later. Photo included.

Canada Goose  90     The total is either 90 or 130, depending on what happened to the 40 geese that were on or around southeast lagoon when I arrived. (I’m assuming they flew to the soccer field while I was at north lagoon.) One goose continued on its nest. Leg marker C231 was on the lawn north of north lagoon, and A415 was on the soccer field.

Wood Duck  3     On sanctuary lagoon (at west edge).

Mallard  10

Great Blue Heron  2     At least two. One in tree by north lagoon, and later on southeast lagoon. The other seen flying west from the sanctuary and continuing off into the distance.

Black-crowned Night-Heron  1     Napping on the north edge of the island.

Cooper’s Hawk  2     Both adults. One on the new nest, the other initially near the old nest, then flew to within about 100 feet of the new nest. The first hawk stood on the nest, but did not seem to be sitting on eggs, so I’ll label this nest building (it is bigger than last time) rather than occupied nest.

Red-shouldered Hawk  1     Called off and on for at least 10 minutes from north of the north lagoon (while I was around the Cultural Center).

Red-tailed Hawk  1     Immature. Flushed from the east edge of the putting course and flew west.

American Coot  2     On sanctuary lagoon.

Killdeer  8     Seven on the soccer field and one on lawn just south of the high school.

Ring-billed Gull  110     At least 30 on lawn east of southeast lagoon, and 65 south of Ogden. (The rest in flight and elsewhere.)

Herring Gull  5     At one point all five flew east from sanctuary lagoon, calling.

Mourning Dove  1     Flew north-northwest from the sanctuary.

Belted Kingfisher  1     Called as it flew over all three lagoons.

Downy Woodpecker  2     Around north lagoon.

American Kestrel  1     Female flew north over east edge of sanctuary, followed by two Red-winged Blackbirds.

Eastern Phoebe  4     Two at edges of north lagoon, one at inner edge of sanctuary lagoon’s reeds, and one at edge of sanctuary meadows. One sang briefly.

American Crow  2     At least two, moved around and called a lot. At one point one seemed to be standing on a possible nest while the other perched nearby. (I won’t label it with a breeding code yet.)

Black-capped Chickadee  2     One sang at southeast corner of sanctuary.

Golden-crowned Kinglet  2     At edges of north lagoon.

American Robin  75     Small flocks on lawns throughout the park. At least 10 sang.

European Starling  1     Flew south from the tennis courts.

American Tree Sparrow  3     In vegetation at east and north edges of sanctuary lagoon.

Fox Sparrow  13     Scattered all over the park. At least 8 sang.

Dark-eyed Junco  27     All but two were south of Ogden, mostly in a large flock foraging under hawthorns. At least 3 sang.

Song Sparrow  23     Most foraged on lawns. At least 6 sang.

Swamp Sparrow  1     Called from reeds in southwest corner of sanctuary lagoon.

sparrow sp.  2

Northern Cardinal  7     Five sang.

Red-winged Blackbird  40     Most seemed on territory. At least 20 sang. Two chased the kestrel as it flew north over the park.

Brown-headed Cowbird  3     Both males sang, and one male stayed close to the female.

blackbird sp.  2     Poorly seen flyovers (maybe more cowbirds).

American Goldfinch  7     Scattered singing males throughout the park (at least 6 sang).

House Sparrow  2     Near Mt. Sinai.

passerine sp.  2     Small poorly seen birds.
