Birds seen/heard in Douglas Park on Tuesday, August 20, 2019, 3:35 hours (early to late morning)

Number of identified species this visit:  35

Mostly clear then thickening overcast developing, slight breeze from the north-northwest developing (storm a couple of hours to west), mid to upper 70s. I parked in the Cultural Center lot, checked the area between the lagoons, then walked the sanctuary (edges of the golf course first, then outside the fence), walked all of my route south of Ogden, walked the rest of the sanctuary fence (east, then north), and finished by walking around the north and southeast lagoons. The lawns and soccer field were moist but not wet (with mudcracks still present). The sanctuary had 28 bird species, south of Ogden 16 species, and the rest of the park 21 species. I looked for but did not find Northern Flicker, Willow Flycatcher, Eastern Phoebe, Marsh Wren, Indigo Bunting, and Common Grackle.

Canada Goose  51     Most of them flew in from the south after I arrived. I saw no markers.

Wood Duck  12     Ten on sanctuary lagoon, and two on Lily Pond.

Mallard  9     On or flying over lagoons and Lily Pond.

Mourning Dove  5     One in sanctuary tree, four on lawn south of Lily Pond.

Chimney Swift  25     At least one high-flying flock of 15 or more.

Killdeer  1     Calling flyover.

Ring-billed Gull  10     Included several juveniles.

Herring Gull  2     Two adults on cupola.

Great Blue Heron  2     At least two, both juveniles/immatures. One caught a catfish (about 6 inches long).

Black-crowned Night-Heron  5     All adults, four perched at edges of island and on at edge of north lagoon inlet.

Cooper’s Hawk  1     Flew rapidly to east over sanctuary with a small creature in its grasp.

Belted Kingfisher  1     Calling and then perched over north lagoon (but a stick kept me from seeing its breast and belly).

Downy Woodpecker  3

Olive-sided Flycatcher  1     Flew between dead branches atop at least four different honey locust trees in the sanctuary.

Eastern Kingbird  5     Lots of calling and display-like flights.

Warbling Vireo  2     One silent, one gave “eww” calls.

American Crow  5     At least five, active and loud, all over the park.

Black-capped Chickadee  7     Group of four in sanctuary, three at edge of north lagoon.

Barn Swallow  35     Saw one adult feeding nestlings. Many became agitated as I approached nest site. Fledglings roosted on Cultural Center ledge. At least 10 south of Ogden (over trees more than soccer field).

White-breasted Nuthatch  3     Two south of Ogden, and one by north lagoon.

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher  3

House Wren  2     Two gave rattle calls south of sanctuary lagoon, and one still singing in northwest corner of sanctuary.

European Starling  1     In treetop near Mt. Sinai.

Gray Catbird  2     Called from brush at edges of golf course.

American Robin  25     Mostly on lawns.

Cedar Waxwing  1     At least one in dead treetop south edge of sanctuary.

House Sparrow  6

American Goldfinch  33     Lots of colorful males (at least five sang) plus lots of calling juveniles. (count has more than doubled over recent visits).

Song Sparrow  1     Perched and calling at northwest corner of sanctuary lagoon.

Baltimore Oriole  3     Called and chattered.

Red-winged Blackbird  2     At least one was a male.

Brown-headed Cowbird  7     Juveniles in a flock on lawn at north edge of soccer field (with cardinals).

Common Yellowthroat  1     At least one calling at southwest corner of the sanctuary lagoon.

American Redstart  1     Female/immature in sanctuary honey locust with chickadees.

Northern Cardinal  8     One sang briefly. At least one juvenile south of Ogden (seemed independent).

passerine sp.  9     Included fast flyovers and ambiguous calls from brush and meadows.
