Birds seen/hear in Douglas Park on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 (4:10 hours, early to late morning)

Number of identified species this visit: 46

Mostly sunny with high clouds developing, breezy, upper 50s to mid 70s. The park was much drier than a week ago (and my boots did not get muddy). The sanctuary had 23 bird species (the meadow and golf course were pretty empty). There were 19 species south of Ogden and I counted 39 species in the rest of the park.

Canada Goose  20     No markers seen. At least two on nests. One nest had been abandoned and eggs were gone.

Wood Duck  3

Mallard  9     I saw 2 pairs and 5 unpaired males.

Blue-winged Teal  1     Lone male on north lagoon (followed by a coot at one point).

Pied-billed Grebe  1     Seen and heard songs on sanctuary lagoon. (Could have been more than one bird, but could not confirm it.)

Great Blue Heron  1     At the edge of southeast lagoon when I arrived.

Black-crowned Night-Heron  2     One on the island and one on the bank near the bridge.

Cooper’s Hawk  3     Two circled high over the sanctuary (migrants?) and one seen on the nest.

American Coot  4     One on north lagoon and three on sanctuary lagoon.

Solitary Sandpiper  1     Flushed from the edge of southeast lagoon and flew off, calling.

Ring-billed Gull  20     Only two were on the soccer field and none were roosting on the lawn east of southeast lagoon.

Caspian Tern  1     Called as it flew to north lagoon from the east, but did not stick around long.

Mourning Dove  1     Flushed from near the inlet and flew east.

Chimney Swift  1     I saw and heard no more than one at a time, and it/they were flying high.

Downy Woodpecker  3

Northern Flicker  3

Eastern Phoebe  2     One sang near the waterfall, and one perched on a putting course rope

Warbling Vireo  2     Saw one on the island and heard one sing by the stone bridge.

American Crow  1     Called from near Roosevelt and Sacramento

Barn Swallow  7     Near nests, over sanctuary lagoon, and low over the soccer fields. I checked the nests and saw 4-5 complete nests, none occupied. However, 3 Barn Swallows flew into the nest site after I left it.

Black-capped Chickadee  3     Three sang in different sections of the park.

Brown Creeper  2     In crab apples at the east end of the Cultural Center

House Wren  1     Singing in front of the Cultural Center

Ruby-crowned Kinglet  5     Two sang.

Hermit Thrush  1     On ground and low branches just north of the waterfall

American Robin  39     Most were around north lagoon. At least 12 sang.

European Starling  15

Common Yellowthroat  1     Sang in un-burnt reeds at the west edge of the sanctuary lagoon.

Yellow Warbler  2     Males foraging and singing in crab apples at either end of the Cultural Center.

Palm Warbler  13     Most were around north lagoon. At least 4 sang.

Yellow-rumped Warbler  16     Almost all were around north lagoon. At least 7 sang.

Black-throated Green Warbler  1     Male in trees at the north edge of the soccer field.

warbler sp. (Parulidae sp.)  4     Chips and trills I could not confirm ID.

Chipping Sparrow  5     Three were on lawns near the inlet and two by the Lily Pond. Two sang.

Field Sparrow  1     Saw and heard song south of Ogden (could have been different birds)

White-throated Sparrow  8     All but one were south of Ogden. Three sang.

Savannah Sparrow  6     Five were on lawns near the inlet and one by the Lily Pond

Song Sparrow  2     Both sang, one earlier flushed from the edge of north lagoon. (I heard none in the sanctuary.)

Swamp Sparrow  2     One flushed from edge of southeast lagoon and one seen at the edge of the sanctuary thicket.

sparrow sp.  3     Mostly unidentified soft calls.

Northern Cardinal  6     Three sang.

Red-winged Blackbird  47     At least 18 sang.

Common Grackle  5

Brown-headed Cowbird  6     Three sang.

Baltimore Oriole  1     In trees over the inlet, singing 2 to 3 notes at a time.
